A futures evaluation is a different product

Comparing a futures firm with a forex firm on the entry fee is a category error, because the two have opposite cost shapes. A futures evaluation is typically cheap to enter — often under $50 after the discounting that is routine in this segment — and expensive to hold, because the ongoing costs that barely exist on a forex account dominate the futures one. The headline price answers a question you are not really asking. The question that decides the outcome is what the account costs over the months you actually hold it, and that total is built from fees the landing page does not lead with.

Everything in this guide feeds one comparison: total cost over your expected holding period, set against the rulebook you must trade inside. Get those two right and the entry fee sorts itself out. Get them wrong and a $29 evaluation becomes the most expensive account you have ever run.

Exchange data fees: the cost that dominates

Real-time futures data is licensed per exchange, per month, and the charge continues whether or not you place a single trade. The four exchanges most retail futures traders encounter — CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX — are billed separately, so a signup page that pre-ticks all four has quietly quadrupled a cost you may not have noticed agreeing to.

Two things decide your bill: how many exchanges you actually need, and whether the firm passes the raw cost through or marks it up. A trader who only trades ES needs one exchange and often ends up subscribed to four because the checkout defaulted that way. Before you buy, work out the single exchange your instrument settles on and disable the rest. The professional classification trap

The professional-versus-non-professional distinction deserves its own warning, because it catches people who do not think of themselves as professionals. Exchanges classify a data subscriber as professional on criteria that can include being registered with a financial regulator, using the data for a business rather than personally, or — the common surprise — trading through a limited company. Being skilled at trading has nothing to do with it; having incorporated for tax reasons might reclassify you at roughly ten times the data cost.

It is entirely possible to save on tax and lose more than the saving on reclassified data fees without ever connecting the two.

Trailing drawdown is the default, not the exception

On forex accounts a static drawdown is common; on futures accounts, intraday trailing drawdown is the norm, usually on a tight percentage, and it is the field most likely to end a futures account that was trading well. There are three variants, and they are genuinely different products wearing the same name.

The "trailing until initial balance" version is worth seeking out specifically, because it removes the worst property of trailing — being breached at a balance above where you started — the moment you have banked enough profit. Session-close flattening

Most futures accounts require positions to be flat before the session close, frequently with an automatic liquidation a few minutes beforehand. The critical thing to establish is what happens if you are still in a position at the cut-off: on some firms it is auto-closed with no penalty beyond the fill, and on others an open position across the close is treated as a rule breach. Those are very different outcomes for the same lapse of attention.

This interacts with how you plan trades near the end of a session — a runner you intended to hold overnight may simply be closed, or may cost you the account, depending on the firm. Contract granularity and account size

Position sizing on futures is coarse in a way that forex is not. One contract is the minimum increment, and on a large-tick instrument a single contract can risk more than a small account's daily limit permits — which means the smallest account is sometimes simply too small to trade the instrument responsibly at all.

Micro contracts solve this where they are available, letting you take a tenth of the notional and size properly against a small buffer. Before buying, do the arithmetic: take one contract at your typical stop distance, convert it to dollars, and check that it fits inside roughly 1% of the distance to your breach level. If a single contract already exceeds that, the account is too small for what you want to trade, and the honest fix is a larger account or a micro instrument rather than a tighter stop that does not suit the setup. Activation and platform fees

Two more charges land after you pass. Activation fees are more common on futures accounts than forex ones and are proportionally large against a cheap evaluation — a $29 evaluation with a $130 activation is a $159 product before any data cost, and it is routinely advertised against a competitor that charges nothing on passing. Platform subscriptions are the other: some platforms carry a monthly licence, sometimes bundled into the firm's price and sometimes billed to you directly, and the version your strategy needs — automated order handling, advanced order types — may be an upgrade on the basic licence that was advertised. What to check, in order

  1. Drawdown variant — specifically whether it trails intraday, at end of day, or only until the initial balance.
  2. Which single exchange your instrument needs, and what it costs per month at your classification.
  3. Your data classification — non-professional or professional, and what would trigger the latter.
  4. Activation fee and platform licence, including which platform tier your strategy actually requires.
  5. Session-close rule: auto-liquidation or breach for an open position at the cut-off.
  6. Whether micro contracts are available at your account size, and whether one contract fits your buffer.
  7. Payout cycle, first-payout wait, minimum and available methods.

The instruments, and which suit a small account

Futures sizing is decided by the tick value of the contract you trade, and this is where the coarse-granularity problem becomes concrete. A single full-size contract can risk more in one tick than a small account can afford across a whole trade, which is why the micro versions matter so much for anyone below a large account size.

The pattern is that the micro is a tenth of the full contract, and for a small or first futures account the micro is usually the only responsible choice — it lets you size a position against a tight buffer instead of being forced into a full contract that a single normal stop would turn into a breach. Before committing to a firm, confirm it actually offers the micro of the instrument you trade at the account size you are buying; some restrict micros or price data differently for them.

A worked sizing example

Suppose you trade ES with a typical stop of 6 points and you are looking at a $50,000 account with an intraday trailing drawdown giving roughly $2,000 of working room. One full ES contract at a 6-point stop risks about $300 — 15% of your buffer on a single trade, which is reckless. One micro (MES) at the same stop risks about $30, or 1.5% of the buffer, which is sane. The platform and data-routing ecosystem

Futures firms sit on top of a small number of platform and data-routing providers, and the choice affects both your monthly cost and how your data classification is handled. You will typically be routed through one connectivity provider and trade on one of a handful of platforms, some of which carry their own monthly licence on top of the exchange data.

Two practical consequences. First, the platform tier the firm bundles may not be the tier your strategy needs — automated order handling, advanced bracket orders or higher data rates are frequently an upgrade billed separately, which is the platform-subscription trap in a specific form. Second, because the data subscription is arranged through the provider, the professional-versus-non-professional classification discussed above is applied at that layer, and a firm cannot always shield you from a reclassification the provider makes. Confirm which platform is included at your price, which tier it is, and what an upgrade costs monthly — these are recurring numbers that never appear on the evaluation's pricing page but land on every subsequent invoice, alongside the rest of the charges in hidden fees.

How futures evaluations are structured

The evaluation itself differs from the forex template in ways worth knowing before you compare targets. Futures firms lean heavily on the trailing drawdown as the primary difficulty lever rather than the profit target, so two firms with the same target can be very different tests depending on how tightly the drawdown follows your equity. Many also run an end-of-day trailing variant specifically on the evaluation, which is milder than intraday and materially changes how much intraday noise you can absorb while still reaching the target.

A second structural feature is the consistency or safety-net requirement that many futures firms attach to the funded stage rather than the evaluation — a minimum balance you must maintain, or a cap on how much of the buffer any single day may consume, which functions as a consistency rule under a different name. Read the funded-account rules, not just the evaluation page, because the evaluation is frequently the lenient document and the funded agreement the strict one. Payouts on a futures account

Futures firms have their own payout conventions, and the first one to understand is the buffer or safety-net that must be reached before any withdrawal — often you must grow the account a set amount above its starting balance and keep it there, so the first payout is further away than the raw cycle suggests. Common futures-account mistakes

  • Subscribing to exchanges you never trade. The most avoidable recurring cost, created by a pre-ticked checkout and never reviewed again.
  • Trading full contracts on a small account. One full ES or NQ contract can breach a small buffer on a normal stop; the micro exists precisely to prevent this.
  • Forgetting the session close. A runner left open into the flatten window is auto-liquidated at best and a breach at worst — know which before it happens.

Practising a futures account before you buy

Futures rewards preparation more than forex does, because the costs and the session structure are unforgiving of learning on live money. Before buying, run the firm's platform on a free or trial connection for long enough to internalise three things: where the session-close flatten window falls in your own timezone, how the trailing drawdown moves against you when a position goes into profit and comes back, and how one contract at your normal stop feels against the account's buffer. None of these can be learned from a landing page, and all three are cheap to learn in advance and expensive to learn at the first breach. A sensible first futures account

Pulling the guide together, a defensible first futures account looks like this: a mid-size account rather than the largest, chosen so that micro contracts let you size properly against the buffer; an end-of-day trailing drawdown or trailing-to-initial-balance variant rather than a tight intraday one; a single exchange enabled for the one instrument you trade, at a non-professional classification; a platform tier that includes what your method needs without an upgrade; and a payout structure whose first-payout threshold you have read alongside the cycle. Futures accounts usually cap the number of contracts you may hold at once, and the cap scales with the account size and sometimes with the buffer you have built. This matters more than it first appears, because the limit interacts with the trailing drawdown: a firm that permits a generous contract count on a tight trailing drawdown is offering rope, not room — the size the rules allow can breach the drawdown the rules also impose. Reading a futures firm's fee schedule

Because the cost lives after the purchase, the fee schedule is the document that actually prices a futures firm, and it repays a careful read. Work through it in this order and write down a monthly number for each line:

  1. Evaluation and reset fees — the one-off cost of reaching a funded account, including a realistic reset assumption.
  2. Activation fee — charged once when the funded account opens, if it applies, and whether it is waived against a first payout.
  3. Platform licence — the monthly cost of the platform tier your strategy needs, not the basic tier advertised.
  4. Exchange data — per exchange, at your classification, for the exchanges you actually trade.
  5. Commission — per round turn, multiplied by your realistic monthly volume, which for an active trader is usually the largest line of all.
  6. Payout and conversion fees — per withdrawal and per currency conversion.

Add the recurring lines into a monthly figure, multiply by the months you expect to hold the account, add the one-offs, and you have the real cost the entry fee stood in for. Questions to send a futures firm in writing

  1. Which drawdown variant applies — intraday trailing, end-of-day trailing, or trailing only to the initial balance?
  2. Which exchanges must I subscribe to for my instrument, at what monthly cost, and am I classified professional or non-professional?
  3. Is there an activation fee, and which platform tier is included in my price versus billed as an upgrade?
  4. What is the session-close rule, and is an open position at the cut-off auto-liquidated or a breach?
  5. Are micro contracts available at my account size, and what is the maximum-contract limit?
  6. What is the first-payout buffer, the payout cycle, and is there a consistency check at payout?

Six answers, kept as a written reply, price the account and reveal the rulebook in one exchange — and a firm that answers them precisely within a day is a different counterparty from one that points you back at its terms.

Futures or forex, for the same trader

If you are genuinely choosing between the two rather than committed to futures, the decision comes down to cost shape and rule shape. Futures rewards a trader who holds an account actively and can absorb the monthly data and platform cost against consistent commission-generating volume, and who prefers the transparency of exchange-traded instruments. Forex, with its more common static drawdowns and negligible data fees, is frequently the cheaper account to hold lightly and the gentler first evaluation.
